How should I choose a real estate agent in the Bay Area?

Choose someone whose experience becomes useful in the conversation—not simply impressive in a biography.

Years alone do not tell you what a person has learned. Ask how the agent evaluates a home, handles uncertainty and responds when your preferences do not fit neatly within the budget.

Experience becomes valuable when someone has learned from difficult transactions, mistakes and the occasions when a plan did not work. Listen for that learning. Can the agent explain why they would approach your situation differently, rather than simply tell you how long they have been licensed? Reputation can introduce you to a person; the quality of that conversation helps you decide whether to stay.

First, share what you want the purchase to accomplish: a beautiful home, a long-term investment, an opportunity to improve value or simply a place that feels right. Those priorities can point toward different properties.

A client, a $250,000 premium and some extraordinary trees

A client once loved a seven-figure home priced about $250,000 above anything I could justify from the comparisons. Paying that premium would stretch him. I did not want to invent a reason for it.

I called the listing agent and explained the gap. The sellers’ answer was memorable: “Those tall trees are well over 50 years old. You can buy another property and have trees like ours 50 years from now—or buy ours and have them tomorrow.”

My client had fallen in love with the trees. Understanding that did not make the comps worth more. It clarified the personal benefit he was considering paying for.

An agent should help you understand your own decision

Sometimes the recommendation is to compete. Sometimes it is to walk away. Sometimes it is to acknowledge that something difficult to replace has personal value beyond the investment calculation.

You deserve to know which conversation you are having.

I would be pleased to begin by hearing what matters to you. That gives you an opportunity to see how I listen, what I notice and whether my approach feels like the right fit. The choice comes after the conversation, not before it.
